First Character Designs

These are my first sketches of the family that runs the travelling circus! I have yet to name them but it goes in the order of: the main character (the daughter to the ringmaster) , the ringmaster (father), the sister (one of the trapeze artists, very invested in the circus), and the mother (runs the circus from behind the scenes, used to be a star back in a famous French circus until she started her own show.)

  1. Hey Mads - the women look mannish and 'peasanty' - I don't dislike them exactly, but it would be good to see some reference etc in terms of time period, ethnicity etc - as I'm wondering where/when/who these people might be?

  2. Me likey! I can see what Phil means by the women look mannish but I think thats just your drawing style, remember what Justin was saying about square shaped characters look more robust and commonly used on heroes to make them look hench - I think this is what you've done so maybe the women would look more feminine by using curves more than lines? And like Nat said with the s and c lines when drawing characters.

  3. Ditto those other two. I would say its probably the chin that's making them look less like ladies; it's normally exaggerated or overgrown features that take away from femininity, kinda the same reason I have trouble drawing woman sometimes.

If you try and experiment with making the figures as slight as possible, perhaps you will encourage a different handle when drawing different things.

  4. I understand what you all mean! I didn't really want them to look too feminine and skinny but it is also just my drawing style but I have tried to update the designs a little!
